Over the past month, Trident Manor has been engaged in the design stage of a new gallery and archive extension as part of a wider university redevelopment project. This has involved close collaboration with the client, project team, architects, and construction specialists to develop practical and effective security solutions tailored to the needs of the building.

Projects of this nature (where display galleries, archive storage, and interactive reading spaces are combined) present both exciting opportunities and complex challenges. A key focus has been ensuring that areas housing high-value or high-volume collections are appropriately secured, while maintaining the functionality, accessibility, and aesthetic quality expected in modern cultural and academic environments.

We highly encourage integrating security considerations at the earliest stages of design. By working alongside stakeholders from the beginning, we have been able to identify which areas require enhanced protection and determine how best to achieve this without compromising the overall user experience.

Our involvement has included advising on physical security measures such as materials, doors, windows, and shutter specifications for different zones within the building. In parallel, we have developed detailed technical security designs to define the placement and specification of systems and equipment. This has been supported by a comprehensive “Operational Requirement” guidance document, outlining the purpose and intended use of each sensor, camera, and access control device to ensure a clear, and effective approach.

Undertaking this work early in the process enables the correct integration of infrastructure such as cabling and ensures that installation teams are fully informed when systems are implemented, reducing the risk of inefficiencies or costly modifications later in the project.
