Risk Assessment of a Historic Castle
Tuesday, 17th March 2026
A member of Trident Manor undertook a Security Risk Assessment at a Scottish Castle in support of the venue’s Museum Accreditation.
After a beautiful drive through the Scottish Highlands, the visit began with a meeting with stakeholders to gather information regarding the operational practices of the site and any plans that may impact the Castle’s security in the future. Operational procedures surrounding guided tours and unguided visits were discussed, and recommendations for each of these styles of visit were provided in the final report.
As well as operational practices, the Trident Manor team evaluated the suitability of the technical equipment and physical features of the building. Many historical buildings have an inherent robustness due to their defensive histories, but changes over time can create vulnerabilities which should be addressed.
The listed status of the building was taken into consideration when providing recommendations for technical improvements, as this is a challenge which Trident Manor consultants regularly advise on. Equipment such as cameras and intruder detection system sensors can be very effective tools if managed and implemented appropriately, but they can hinder security operations if they are over- or under-scoped.
