Supporting Volunteer Led Museums

Not all accredited museums have massive budgets, resources, or expertise to implement appropriate levels of security. Trident Manor is proud to support all museums and cultural venues in achieving museum accreditation.

Trident Manor is proud to work with museums and cultural institutions of all sizes, whether nationally or internationally. As an organisation, we are aware that not all cultural venues have the necessary finances, personnel, or expertise to determine and implement appropriate and proportionate security measures, especially when seeking accreditation.
Unfortunately, we have seen situations where museums have sought advice and guidance from technical security providers where physical security requirements exist (and vice versa), resulting in unnecessary expenditure that many can ill afford.
Although we are a commercial organisation, we often seek to support the wider cultural sector through pro bono work, redirecting them to freely available information and advice (https://collectionstrust.org.uk/security-advice/ or https://iaas-forum.com/), or by offering our services at greatly reduced rates. We view this as a way in which we are actively participating in protecting and preserving the cultural heritage of our global community.
Last week, we had the pleasure of visiting a beautiful seaside village called Robin Hood’s Bay, where there is a volunteer-run museum perched on a hillside in the cobbled streets of this historical fishing/smuggling village. It was full of social history (the fact that it was a former Coroner’s building with its own mortuary before becoming a ‘Reading Room’ tells its own story) and artefacts of bygone activities of the village. Stories of smuggling dating back to the 17th century, and infographic boards depicting the ships that have been wrecked due to the treacherous seas in and around the coastline, make this type of museum a truly valuable part of our social history and cultural identity.
Support and advice were given that were easy to follow and implement, without breaking the bank. The venue and its trustees were provided with a comprehensive report, risk rating tables, and a list of recommendations to support their museum accreditation.
The takeaway from this visit, apart from the pleasure of working with such devoted individuals, is that we support their accreditation processes and help reduce the risks to their assets in a sensible, pragmatic, and cost-effective way.
It is also rewarding from our side when trustees describe our work and services as ‘Excellent’, which validates our approach and the quality of service that we deliver.
