University Library Special Collections Review
Friday, 23rd May 2025

In May 2025, Trident Manor visited a UK University’s Library and Archive team to conduct a review of the security measures for their cultural collections.
In addition to the site walk-around and evaluation, time was taken to discuss security with a wide range of stakeholders, including Curatorial and Collections Care staff, Visitor Services Managers, and the University Security Team. The purpose of these meetings is to understand their concerns for the sites, visitors, and collections. This is always an important part of a security review, as it often helps put things into context and highlights where attention needs to be paid.
This university’s cultural collections facilities are comprised of multiple sites across a widespread campus, which is often the case for academic organisations, and can lead to challenges in operational consistency. The sites included libraries, archives, special collections stores, offices, exhibition spaces and a research centre. Each of these areas runs on a variety of operations and therefore faces unique risks.
Hannah Miller, Junior Security Consultant for Trident Manor, commented: “An important feature of this project was looking at the operational practices in place within the cultural collections team, considering all relevant eventualities and vulnerabilities and identifying ways to make documentation and practices more robust. This can only be done when conversations around risk and asset criticality have taken place.”
